Roofers in Alabama: $23.01 an hour on average, 18% below the national mean. Range from homeowners who hired a professional (2021 to 2023, American Housing Survey 2023), in August 2026 dollars; permits, tear-off of unusual materials, structural repairs and local surcharges vary job to job. How this is calculated.
Plan on roughly $9,850 for a professionally installed roof in Alabama, with the middle half of jobs between $6,060 and $15,140. That is well under the national median of $11,450, because homeowners in the East South Central division (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee) told the 2023 American Housing Survey they paid about 14% less than the U.S. figure for the same kind of job. Wages inside the state barely shift the result: Alabama roofers averaged $23.01 an hour in BLS data for May 2025, almost exactly the division's weighted mean and 18% under the national $27.95. All prices are in August 2026 dollars. House size changes the bill more than geography does, from about $8,470 for a home of 1,000 to 1,499 sq ft to $13,790 at 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft. Storms set the calendar for many owners here, since FEMA puts expected annual tornado losses to Alabama buildings near $190 million.
Two wind hazards on one Alabama roof
Alabama is one of the few states where hurricanes and tornadoes both sit near the top of the federal loss tables. The FEMA National Risk Index (December 2025 release) puts expected annual losses to Alabama buildings from hurricanes at about $426 million, the 7th largest total among the 51 jurisdictions, and from tornadoes at $190 million, a figure rated Relatively High. Hail is a minor line by comparison, at $7 million a year and rated Relatively Low. An Alabama roof is therefore more exposed to uplift and wind-driven debris than to the bruised shingles that dominate claims on the Plains.
That pattern deserves attention when the contract arrives. Ask how the crew fastens the first course along the eaves and rakes, how many nails each shingle receives, and whether the ridge cap carries the same wind rating as the field shingles. Those choices rarely add much to the price, and they govern how the roof behaves in the next named storm.
What the $2,500 line means for an Alabama homeowner
Under Alabama law, a residential roofer counts as a home builder once the job costs more than $2,500, and the Home Builders Licensure Board (HBLB) issues a dedicated Roofers License for that work. The license is backed by a license or permit bond, and the company must also hold a local contractor business license. Practically every full replacement on this page clears the threshold, since even the low end for a small house is $5,320. Search the company on the board's site before signing and copy the license number onto the contract.
Labor that tracks its neighbors
BLS counted 1,010 roofers in Alabama in May 2025. Mississippi's mean of $21.77 sits below the Alabama figure and Kentucky's $24.37 sits above, so the state lands near the middle of its division and the wage step moves the estimate by only 0.1%. The survey level of the division does the heavy lifting: the same job is priced about 14% under the national median before wages enter the calculation. For a house of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft, the Alabama estimate is $13,790, with half of comparable jobs between $9,850 and $18,920. A quote far above that band usually hides decking replacement, a second layer to strip, or a steep pitch, and each can be priced as its own line.
