Roofers in Hawaii: $29.53 an hour on average, 6% above the national mean. Range from homeowners who hired a professional (2021 to 2023, American Housing Survey 2023), in August 2026 dollars; permits, tear-off of unusual materials, structural repairs and local surcharges vary job to job. How this is calculated.
A professional roof replacement in Hawaii costs roughly $14,580 in 2026, with half of jobs between $8,970 and $22,410, the 4th highest estimate of the 51 jurisdictions and far above the national median of $11,450. The cause is the Pacific division: owners there reported paying about 30% more than the U.S. median in the 2023 American Housing Survey. Hawaii wages actually pull the estimate down a little. BLS measured a mean of $29.53 an hour for island roofers in May 2025, 6% above the national $27.95 but about 8% under the division's weighted average, which California and Washington lift. A home of 1,000 to 1,499 sq ft comes out near $12,540, one of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft near $20,410. FEMA's index rates nearly every hazard to Hawaii buildings Very Low; wildfire, rated Relatively Moderate, is the exception. A contractor's license is required above $1,500 or whenever a permit is needed.
Paid below the Pacific average, priced near the top
Hawaii shows how this site separates the regional price level from local pay. The division median, built from Pacific homeowners' reports, starts about 30% above the national figure. Then only the labor share moves to the state wage, and Hawaii's $29.53 hourly mean trails California's $32.41 and Washington's $33.11. The wage step therefore lowers the Hawaii estimate by a few hundred dollars, yet the result still ranks 4th on the site. Shipping costs for materials are not modeled separately; they sit inside what Pacific owners reported paying.

A short list of hazards for Hawaii buildings
The FEMA National Risk Index (December 2025) rates expected annual losses to Hawaii buildings from hail, strong wind, tornadoes, winter weather and ice storms all Very Low, with hail near $41,000 a year. Hurricanes are rated Very Low at about $2 million. Wildfire stands out at roughly $44 million, rated Relatively Moderate. With so little storm pressure in the federal estimates, most Hawaii roofs reach replacement through age, sun and moisture rather than a single event, which means owners can usually plan the job, gather several written bids and pick a dry stretch of the year for the tear-off.
License threshold and county codes
According to the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, a contractor's license is required for any project over $1,500 in labor and materials, or for any project that needs a building, electrical or plumbing permit. That is the general contractor licensing regime; a roofing specialty class could not be confirmed on the pages we read. The State Residential Code is the 2018 IRC as adopted by the State Building Code Council, and each county adopts and amends it locally, so the permit counter on your island decides which details apply. For a house of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft, the Hawaii estimate is $20,410, with half of comparable jobs between $14,580 and $28,010.
