Roofers in Idaho: $26.11 an hour on average, 7% below the national mean. Range from homeowners who hired a professional (2021 to 2023, American Housing Survey 2023), in August 2026 dollars; permits, tear-off of unusual materials, structural repairs and local surcharges vary job to job. How this is calculated.
For a roof replacement by a contractor in Idaho, the 2026 estimate is about $12,040, and half of jobs fall between $7,410 and $18,500, a little above the national median of $11,450. Idaho belongs to the Mountain division, where owners reported paying about 5% over the U.S. median in the 2023 American Housing Survey. Its 1,190 roofers earned a mean of $26.11 an hour in BLS data for May 2025, 7% under the national $27.95 and very close to the division average, so the wage step hardly changes the result. The comparison that surprises people is westward: Oregon's estimate is $14,580 and Washington's $14,990, because the Pacific division reported much higher prices. Within Idaho, a home of 1,000 to 1,499 sq ft comes out near $10,350 and one of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft near $16,860. Wildfire is the hazard with the largest expected annual loss to Idaho buildings in FEMA's index.
One border, two price levels for Idaho roofs
The American Housing Survey groups states into Census divisions, and Idaho's western line is also a division line. On the Idaho side, the Mountain level applies; on the Oregon and Washington side, the Pacific level does. The gap between $12,040 in Idaho and $14,580 in Oregon is not about shingles. Oregon roofers average $29.57 an hour against Idaho's $26.11, and the Pacific survey median starts higher. Homeowners near the border who get bids from both sides should expect that spread to show up in labor and overhead lines.
Wildfire and winter in FEMA's Idaho table
The FEMA National Risk Index (December 2025) puts expected annual wildfire losses to Idaho buildings at about $137 million, rated Relatively High and the 7th largest wildfire figure among the 51 jurisdictions. Winter weather is rated Relatively High, though its dollar loss to buildings is small. Hail is rated Very Low and tornadoes Relatively Low, so the Plains-style hail claim is not the main driver of Idaho reroofs. Owners on lots near brush or timber can ask roofers which covering class and vent types they propose, and price those choices as separate lines.
Idaho labor next to Montana and Utah
Idaho pays $26.11 an hour, between Utah's $24.80 and Montana's $27.41. For a house of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft, the estimate is $16,860, and half of comparable jobs land between $12,040 and $23,130. Snow load does not appear as a separate price factor in the survey, but a roof that has carried heavy snow for years may hide soft decking near the eaves, so ask how many sheets the bid covers before extra charges start, and at what price per sheet. A bid that answers those questions in writing is easier to compare than a single total, and it protects you from a surprise invoice once the old shingles come off and the deck is exposed.
