Roofers in Massachusetts: $35.09 an hour on average, 26% above the national mean. Range from homeowners who hired a professional (2021 to 2023, American Housing Survey 2023), in August 2026 dollars; permits, tear-off of unusual materials, structural repairs and local surcharges vary job to job. How this is calculated.

Replacing a roof in Massachusetts with a professional crew costs about $13,480 in 2026, and half of jobs land between $8,300 and $20,710, the 6th highest estimate among the 51 jurisdictions and well above the national median of $11,450. Two layers of cost stack up. New England owners reported paying about 15% more than the U.S. median in the 2023 American Housing Survey, and Massachusetts roofers earned a mean of $35.09 an hour in BLS data for May 2025, 26% above the national $27.95 and the 3rd highest roofer wage in the country. A house of 1,000 to 1,499 sq ft is estimated near $11,590 and one of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft near $18,870, before any extra for slate, multiple layers or a steep roof. Weather losses are moderate. FEMA's National Risk Index puts expected annual hurricane losses to Massachusetts buildings near $183 million, ice storms are rated Relatively High, and hail barely registers.

A wage ladder topped by Massachusetts

Within New England, roofer pay climbs from Maine at $25.82 an hour through New Hampshire at $30.69 and Connecticut at $32.93 to Massachusetts at $35.09. BLS counted 1,950 roofers in the state. All six states share the same survey price level, so the difference in their estimates comes only from labor: Maine's typical job is $12,540, against $13,480 here. Since payroll and benefits are only part of a contractor's revenue, the spread is narrower than the wages alone would suggest. Put differently, a Massachusetts owner pays for the regional price level first and for local wages second, and the second part is the one a sharper bid can move.

Hurricane and ice, not hail, in Massachusetts

The FEMA National Risk Index (December 2025) estimates expected annual hurricane losses to Massachusetts buildings at about $183 million, the 11th largest total in the country, rated Relatively Moderate. Ice storms add roughly $18 million, rated Relatively High, and tornadoes $29 million. Hail is rated Very Low and wildfire Very Low. That profile points to wind-driven rain at the edges and ice at the eaves rather than impact damage across the field of the roof.

Comparing Massachusetts quotes

For a house of 3,000 to 3,999 sq ft, the estimate is $18,870, with half of comparable jobs between $13,480 and $25,890. Older homes with steep roofs, dormers or more than one layer of old shingles take more labor hours, and the quote should show where those hours go. The survey mostly captures asphalt jobs; slate and copper work sits in a different price class entirely. When two bids differ widely, line them up on the same items: number of layers removed, sheathing allowance and price per sheet beyond it, ice barrier coverage, flashing at chimneys, and disposal. A written quote decides the final number, and a contractor who cannot break it down that way is hard to hold to it.

Questions people ask

How much does a new roof cost in Massachusetts in 2026?

About $13,480 for a professional replacement, with half of Massachusetts jobs between $8,300 and $20,710. Why is reroofing in Massachusetts more expensive than in Maine?

Both states share the New England price level, but Massachusetts roofers earn $35.09 an hour against $25.82 in Maine, according to BLS. Moving the labor share to each state's wage gives about $13,480 for a typical Massachusetts job and $12,540 in Maine. Materials cost about the same in both.

What weather damages Massachusetts roofs most?

FEMA's National Risk Index puts expected annual hurricane losses to Massachusetts buildings at about $183 million and rates ice storm losses Relatively High. Hail is rated Very Low.
